System Components

The Hardware Behind Every High-Performance Solar Build

A solar energy system is only as reliable as its weakest component. This collection covers the balance-of-system hardware that connects, converts, protects, and monitors your installation — inverters, charge controllers, transfer switches, mounting hardware, wiring, and monitoring equipment from Growatt, Sol-Ark, MidNite Solar, Jackery, and Nature's Generator.

What You'll Find Here

Inverters & Inverter-Chargers

Pure sine wave inverter-chargers convert stored DC battery power to clean AC for sensitive electronics and appliances, while simultaneously handling AC battery charging. Solar charger inverters combine MPPT charge control and load output in a single unit. Hybrid solar inverters connect to the grid, battery storage, and solar simultaneously — maximizing self-consumption while providing seamless backup switching. Available from 3kW single-phase up to 15kW split-phase 120/240V configurations. Sol-Ark and Growatt inverters carry UL certification for U.S. grid interconnection.

MPPT Solar Charge Controllers

Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) controllers regulate energy flow from solar panels to battery banks, maintaining optimal charge efficiency across changing light conditions. Standalone controllers are appropriate for off-grid systems where a separate inverter is already in place. Available in 60A and 100A ratings. The MidNite Solar Classic 150 and Classic 250 are among the highest-performing standalone MPPT controllers available for residential off-grid systems.

Transfer Switches

Automatic transfer switches (ATS) detect grid failure and route critical circuits to backup power without manual intervention — typically within 30 milliseconds. Available in 30A, 50A, and 125A ratings from Nature's Generator for portable and whole-home backup systems. Manual transfer switches (30A and 50A, 4- to 12-circuit configurations) provide a lower-cost option for planned switching between grid and generator power. The Jackery Smart Transfer Switch pairs specifically with the Explorer 5000 Plus for automatic circuit-level coverage without a dedicated electrician's panel work.

Mounting Hardware & Racking

Rail-less rooftop mounting systems from Sunmodo NanoRack — compatible with standard 60- and 72-cell panel formats on asphalt shingle and metal roof surfaces. Ground-mount frames from IntegraRack in 15°, 30°, and 45° tilt configurations for fixed and adjustable installations. The Nature's Generator Universal Solar Panel Mount rounds out semi-portable panel positioning for generator-paired setups.

Wiring, Cables & Connectors

Pre-terminated battery-to-inverter cables in 4/0 AWG and 1/0 AWG, 10 AWG copper PV wire, MC4-compatible connectors and crimping tools, and Jackery DC extension, car charging, and Anderson connector cables. Correct wire sizing and connector quality directly affect system efficiency and safety — undersized wiring generates resistive heat under load and degrades both output and component longevity.

Battery Racks, Cabinets & Monitoring

5-layer battery racks and enclosed server-rack cabinets for organized, ventilated lithium battery installations. Tigo rapid shutdown and power optimization units, Growatt smart meters, and MidNite Solar communications modules and combiners for full system-level monitoring and rapid shutdown compliance.

Compatibility Comes First

Inverters, batteries, and controllers must be matched by voltage class (12V, 24V, or 48V), current rating, and communication protocol. If you are building a system from individual components rather than a complete kit, our energy team can verify compatibility before you order — saving you a return shipment and a project delay. Call (210) 900-2018 or browse our matched-kit bundles in the Energy Storage collection.

Inverters

Turn battery or solar DC into household AC. Match the battery voltage and your AC service first, then size for surge.

Batteries

Store energy for night, cloudy days and outages. Pick the voltage, then the format and kWh.

Charge Controllers

Regulate charging from panels or turbines. Solar uses MPPT. Wind needs a wind-rated controller with a brake or dump load.

How a system fits together

Every solar or wind system has the same five building blocks. All five must share one battery voltage, and the inverter must match your home’s AC service.

System Components FAQ

The compatibility questions our customers ask most when building or expanding a system.

Compatibility
How do I know if components are compatible?

Check three things:

  • Battery voltage (12V, 24V or 48V) must match across the batteries, the inverter and every charge controller.
  • AC output (120V or 120/240V split-phase) must match the loads you’ll run.
  • Battery chemistry must match the charging profile set on your inverter and controllers.

For lithium batteries, also confirm the battery is on the inverter maker’s closed-loop compatibility list.

Single-phase, split-phase, three-phase: which do I need?

US homes are almost always split-phase 120/240V. Cabins, RVs and outbuildings with no 240V appliances can use 120V single-phase. Three-phase (120/208V or 480V) is for commercial buildings and some apartment services. You may hear split-phase called “dual-phase.”

Can I use a solar charge controller for my wind turbine?

No. When the batteries are full, a solar controller simply stops charging, and an unloaded turbine can overspeed. Wind turbines need a wind-rated or hybrid controller with braking or a dump (diversion) load. Hybrid controllers accept both wind and solar.

How many panels can my charge controller handle?

Two limits apply: the controller’s output amps, and its maximum PV input voltage. Panel voltage rises in cold weather, so add up your string’s open-circuit voltage (Voc) using your coldest expected temperature and keep it under the maximum. When a controller is maxed out, add a second controller on the same battery bank.

Adding to a system
I have solar. How do I add a wind turbine?

Add a turbine with its own wind controller at your battery voltage. Both controllers charge the same bank. Our wind kits include a matched controller, and most include a tower. If your area gets hurricanes or severe windstorms, choose a storm-protected model.

How do I go from 120V to 240V?

Replace a 120V-only inverter with a split-phase 120/240V inverter at the same battery voltage. Alternatively, if your inverter supports it, stack a second matched unit in split-phase parallel. Size the new inverter for your largest motor’s start-up surge.

Can I replace lead-acid batteries with lithium?

Yes, but replace the whole bank: the two chemistries can’t be mixed. Then set your inverter and charge controllers to a LiFePO4 profile. Some wind controllers come in separate lithium and lead-acid/gel versions.

Safety & Code
What protection does a system need?

At minimum:

  • A properly rated fuse or breaker between the battery and the inverter.
  • PV disconnects and breakers or fuses on the array.
  • Correctly sized cable.
  • Surge or lightning protection on long runs.
  • Rapid shutdown where your code requires it.

See combiners, breakers & surge protection.

Do I need a permit or engineering stamp?

Most areas require a permit for permanently installed solar, battery and grid-tied systems, and many require stamped plans. Our design & permitting services provide permit plansets and engineer review.
