Store the Power. Run the House.

The grid goes out. Solar panels overproduce at noon and produce nothing at midnight. A battery bank solves both. This collection is focused on storage: home battery backup systems, 12V, 24V and 48V battery banks, server-rack and wall-mount batteries, expansion packs and inverter + battery bundles. Pick a path below or let the finder size it for you.

Home Battery Backup
Starting at $2,800 | Electrician recommended

Wall-mount and floor-standing battery systems that keep the house running through outages. Pair with a transfer switch or hybrid inverter. Best for: homeowners with frequent outages or solar.

Shop Home Backup
Battery Banks: 12V, 24V, 48V
Starting at $199 | Match your inverter

Lithium battery banks for cabins, off-grid homes and solar storage. Choose voltage first, then format. Best for: off-grid builders, solar owners, cabins and RVs.

Shop Batteries
Expand Your Bank
Starting at $480 | Matched add-on batteries

Add capacity to a power station or battery system you already own. Match voltage, brand and chemistry. Best for: upgrading an existing system.

Not sure where to start? Use the Energy Storage Finder above. It sizes a battery bank in kWh for outage backup, off-grid living, adding storage to solar you already own, or expanding a bank you already have. Or pick the path that matches your situation.

I want my home to keep running when the grid goes down

Start with Home Battery Backup Systems: wall-mount and floor-standing systems built to be installed with a transfer switch or hybrid inverter. Add a transfer switch if you want circuits to move over automatically. A licensed electrician should handle grid-connected installs.

I have solar and want to store the extra

Match the battery to your inverter. Hybrid and off-grid inverters usually run on 48V, so see 48V batteries and server-rack batteries. Already have a grid-tie system? Inverter + battery bundles add storage without replacing your panels.

I live off the grid or I am building a cabin

Size your bank by daily kWh multiplied by the days you want to ride through without sun, then add margin for cold weather. Browse 24V and 12V banks for small cabins and RVs, or 48V for whole-home systems. Need the whole package? See complete off-grid kits.

I already own batteries and need more capacity

Use expansion batteries for power stations and home battery systems, or add matching modules to a rack bank. Always match voltage, chemistry and the manufacturer's approved list before connecting new batteries to an old bank.

How to Pick the Right Battery

  • Voltage: match your inverter. 12V and 24V suit small cabins and vehicles; 48V is the standard for home systems; high-voltage stacks pair with high-voltage hybrid inverters. See high-voltage batteries.
  • Format: wall-mount and outdoor units save floor space and some are weather-rated. Server-rack modules scale in steps inside a cabinet.
  • Cold weather: lithium iron phosphate batteries generally should not be charged below freezing. In an unheated garage or outdoors, choose self-heating batteries or install indoors.
  • Capacity: kWh is what counts. Amp-hours alone do not compare across voltages. Most of the lithium batteries here have a usable depth of discharge of roughly 90% or more; check each spec table.
  • Certifications: look for UL 1973 and UL 9540A where your installer or utility requires them for permits and incentives.

Energy Storage FAQ

Straight answers on sizing, compatibility and installation for home and off-grid batteries.

Sizing
How much battery storage do I need?

Start with your daily energy use in kWh: take the monthly kWh on your electric bill and divide by 30. Then decide how many days the batteries must carry you without sun (consultants call this “days of autonomy”).

Battery size ≈ daily kWh × days ÷ 0.9, because LiFePO4 batteries can safely use about 90% of their rated capacity. Add about 10% if the batteries live somewhere cold. Our Energy Storage Finder does this math for you.

What’s the difference between kW and kWh?

kWh (capacity) is how much energy the battery holds, which sets how long you can run. kW (power) is how much the inverter can deliver at once, which sets what you can run at the same time. A big battery on a small inverter can run small loads for a long time. A big inverter on a small battery can start a well pump but won’t run it for long.

How many days of autonomy should an off-grid system have?

Classic off-grid designs used 3–5 days with lead-acid batteries. With lithium and a backup generator, most homes are designed for 1–3 days. Choose 1 day if a generator can recharge you, 2 for a balanced design, and 3 or more if you have no generator or long cloudy winters.

Why does the inverter’s surge rating matter?

Motors in well pumps, AC compressors and refrigerators draw 3–6× their running watts for a split second at start-up. If the inverter’s surge rating (and how long it can hold that surge) is too low, the motor won’t start. Check the motor’s nameplate before choosing an inverter.

Compatibility
What battery voltage should I choose: 12V, 24V or 48V?

Match your inverter. As a rule of thumb, 12V suits RVs, vans and small cabins, 24V mid-size cabins, and 48V whole-home systems. Higher voltage means lower current, thinner cable and better efficiency. Every battery, inverter and charge controller in a system must share the same battery voltage.

Can I add new batteries to my existing bank?

Yes, with care. Never mix lithium and lead-acid in one bank. When adding lithium, use the same model and generation so the battery management systems can communicate, and keep all modules at the same voltage. If your model is discontinued, it’s often better to start a second, separate bank. Contact us before ordering if you’re unsure.

Can I add batteries to my existing grid-tie solar?

Yes. There are two paths:

  • Replace the grid-tie inverter with a hybrid inverter and move your panels to it.
  • AC-couple a battery inverter beside your existing system. Its continuous rating should be at least as large as your PV inverter.

Either way, your solar can then run during outages. See our inverter + battery bundles.

What is “split-phase” 120/240V, and do I need it?

Most US homes are wired split-phase: two 120V legs that combine to 240V. You need a split-phase inverter if you want to back up 240V loads such as a well pump, central AC, electric dryer, range or Level 2 EV charger. You may hear it called “dual-phase.” On spec sheets, look for “split-phase” or “120/240V.”

Installation & Safety
Can lithium batteries be installed in a cold garage or cabin?

LiFePO4 batteries can discharge in the cold but must not be charged below about 32°F (0°C). In unheated spaces, choose self-heating batteries, which warm themselves before charging, or use an insulated, heated enclosure.

Do I need an electrician?

Plug-in power stations used with extension cords don’t. Anything connected to your home’s wiring does: a transfer switch, a hybrid inverter, or wall and rack batteries. Those must be installed by a licensed electrician, and most areas require a permit. Grid-connected systems also need your utility’s approval.

What do UL 1973 and UL 9540 mean?

UL 1973 certifies the battery itself. UL 9540 certifies the complete energy storage system, and many fire codes and permits require it. UL 9540A is a fire-propagation test method, not a certification. Ask your permitting office which listing it requires.
