How to Size a Robotic Mower to Your Yard: Acreage, Slope and Obstacles

Sunseeker Elite X7 Series robotic lawn mower for up to 1.5 acres

Quick answer

Measure your mowable area in square feet, divide by 43,560 to get acres, then choose a mower rated for more than your lawn, not exactly your lawn. Slope, narrow passages, many obstacles, and separate lawn zones all cut into real-world coverage. If your yard is steep or complicated, move up a size and check the mower's slope rating.

Buying a robotic mower that is too small is the most common and most avoidable mistake. The coverage number on the box is a manufacturer's rating for good conditions, and your yard is not a lab. This guide shows how to measure your lawn, how slope and obstacles change the math, and how to match the result to a mower.

Step 1: measure your mowable area

Only count grass the mower will actually cut. Exclude the house, driveway, patios, garden beds, and pools.

  1. Rectangular areas: length times width gives square feet. A 150 ft by 200 ft lawn is 30,000 sq ft.
  2. Irregular areas: break the lawn into rectangles and triangles, calculate each, and add them together. A satellite view such as a free mapping app helps, and many robot apps also measure the lawn when you map it.
  3. Convert to acres: divide square feet by 43,560. One acre is 43,560 sq ft. Thirty thousand square feet is about 0.69 acre.
  4. If you see square meters in a spec sheet: 1 square meter is about 10.76 sq ft, so 2,500 m² is roughly 0.62 acre.

Step 2: understand what coverage ratings mean

Manufacturers rate coverage in acres for a mower under favorable conditions. Some quote a single charge, some quote per day, and some quote a time window. They are not directly comparable, so read the fine print. For example, Sunseeker states that the X9 covers 3 acres and the X9 Plus covers 6 acres in 48 hours, while Lymow lists up to 0.57 acre per charge and 1.73 acres per day for the One Plus. Segway lists the Navimow X3 series by model, from X315 at up to 0.4 acre to X390 at up to 2.5 acres.

Step 3: adjust for slope

Hills slow a mower down and increase battery use. Measure the steepest slope (a 2-foot drop over a 4-foot run is a 50% slope) and confirm the mower's rating clears it with margin. Percent and degrees are different scales: 100% is 45 degrees. Our hills and steep slopes guide explains the difference and lists ratings for each mower we carry.

Step 4: adjust for obstacles and layout

  • Trees, beds, and play equipment force the mower to path around them. Many small obstacles slow coverage more than a few large ones.
  • Narrow passages between a fence and a bed can be hard for a large cutting deck to navigate. Wider decks cut faster in open areas but need wider gaps.
  • Separate lawn zones (front yard and back yard) need a way for the mower to travel between them, or you must carry it. Check whether the model supports multiple zones and how it crosses paths or gravel.
  • Open sky and signal. RTK systems prefer a clear sky view, while LiDAR and vision systems cope better under trees. See our navigation guide.

Step 5: match your acreage to a mower

The table uses each manufacturer's own coverage statement. As a rule of thumb, we recommend picking a model whose rated coverage is comfortably above your measured mowable area, and moving up a tier if your lawn is hilly, cluttered, or split into zones.

Mower Manufacturer coverage rating Max slope (manufacturer) Good fit for
Sunseeker Elite X4 Up to 0.3 acre 45% / 24° Small, fairly simple lawns
Sunseeker Elite X5 Gen 2 Up to 0.5 acre 60% / 30° Half-acre lots with some slope
Dreame A3 AWD Pro 2500 0.62 acre 80% / 38.7° Hilly lots up to about 0.6 acre
Dreame A3 AWD Pro 3500 0.87 acre 80% / 38.7° Larger hilly residential lots
Dreame A3 AWD Pro 5000 About 1.2 acres 80% / 38.7° Large lots with complex terrain
Sunseeker Elite X7 Gen 2 Series Up to 1.5 acres 70% / 35° One- to one-and-a-half-acre properties
Lymow One Plus 0.57 acre per charge; up to 1.73 acres per day 45° (tracked) Rough or steep ground; multi-session mowing
Sunseeker Elite X9 Series 3 acres (X9) or 6 acres (X9 Plus) in 48 hours 90% / 42° Large properties

A worked example

Say your back lawn measures 120 ft by 180 ft, which is 21,600 sq ft or about 0.5 acre, and your front lawn adds another 8,000 sq ft. That totals about 0.68 acre. Subtract areas you will not mow, such as a 600 sq ft garden bed, and you are near 0.66 acre. You have two zones, several trees, and a back slope of about 40%. A mower rated for exactly 0.66 acre would be marginal. A model with a rating of roughly 0.87 acre or more, and a slope rating well above 40%, leaves headroom for the slope, the trees, and the second zone.

Mowing time and schedule

Robot mowers cut a little at a time, often every day or every few days, so the question is whether the mower can finish the whole lawn within your schedule and weather. A rainy week or a long grass-growth spurt is when undersizing shows. Bigger headroom means the mower recovers quicker.

What about remote-control mowers?

If part of your property is too steep or overgrown for any autonomous mower, a remote-controlled machine such as the Mowrator S1 may fit. Mowrator lists approximately 1.125 acres per charge. See our comparison of RC, zero-turn and autonomous mowers.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert square feet to acres?

Divide the area in square feet by 43,560. For example, 21,780 sq ft is half an acre.

Should I buy a mower rated exactly for my lawn size?

We recommend choosing a mower rated above your measured mowable area, and moving up another tier if the yard is steep, cluttered, or split into zones, because ratings are for good conditions.

Does slope reduce how much a robotic mower can cover?

Typically yes. Slopes slow the mower and use more battery, so a hilly lawn effectively behaves like a larger one. Confirm that the slope rating clears your steepest section as well.

What if my front and back yards are separate?

Check whether the model supports multiple zones and how it travels between them. Some owners carry the mower between zones, which is fine, but plan for it.

Can one mower handle several acres?

Large-property models are available. Sunseeker states that the X9 Plus covers 6 acres in 48 hours. For commercial or very large turf, FJ Dynamics platforms are available by quote.
